The Botanic Garden (also known as Botanical Garden) is a popular recreational spot for locals, many coming as early as 5 a.m.. Popular activites include jogging, walking, aerobics, tai chi and many more. It is also one of the starting point for the trek up to Penang Hill and the surrounding highlands.
It also houses various unusual plants, the most conspicuous of all is the Cannon Ball Tree (Couroupita guianensis).
One is very likely to spot a large number of long-tailed macaques. Advice: Not only it is illegal for you to feed them, I still strongly recommend not to bring any food in, not to mention feed them. These monkeys can get very aggressive, and can even snatch food off your hand.
If you go early enough, you might be lucky enough to spot some gibbons.
Probably the "prized possesion" of the park is the waterfall. It feeds into a reservoir, which is to be processed and supplied to the people of Penang. Unfortunately, it now belongs to the Penang Water Authorithy and is closed to the public. However, once a year on World Water Day (3 April), the waterfall is opened to the public.
All in all, it is a very nice place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Opening Hours: 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., every day of the year
